LeCorbusier & BalkrishnaVithaldas Doshi

The subject of the third exhibition at the Case Study Room is Balkrishna Vithaldas “B.V.” Doshi, the first Indian architect to win the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s Nobel, in 2018.

While studying in London in 1951, Doshi met Le Corbusier and Takamasa Yoshizaka at the 8th CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne) in Hoddesdon, in the outskirts of London, and the following year joined Corbusier's atelier in Paris. He was involved in the planning of Chandigarh city, which was then in the early stages of development, and was chief architect on Sarabhai’s Villa (1952-56), Villa Shodhan (1952-56), Ahmedabad Textile Mills Association (1956) and the Sanskar Kendra Museum (1957) in Ahmedabad, western India. These are considered to be among the paragons of Corbusier's architectural work.

He was also credited with designing the Indian Institute of Management in collaboration with Louis Kahn, who first visited India in 1962. Doshi, then, studied under two of modernism's foremost masters before becoming instrumental in the development of contemporary Indian architecture in his own right.

Although B.V. Doshi sadly passed away in 2023, a sense of his vast achievement can be gained through the furniture currently on display at the Case Study Room.
